Car Seat Safety: Travel Tips

Orbit Baby car seats are designed with travel convenience in mind.

Whether you are traveling by car or plane, make sure your children are safe and secure in their car seats with the following tips:

1. Properly installing the car seat

Whether traveling in your own vehicle or with a rental car or taxi, ensure the car seat is always properly installed.  Check that the car seat or car seat base is properly leveled and does not move more than 1” at the belt path in any direction.  You can always reference the product labeling on the car seat, our instruction manuals, or our installation videos to make sure you have installed your seat correctly.  In addition, you can find certified child passenger safety technicians at a car seat fitting station near you by visiting nhtsa.gov or seatcheck.org.

2. Properly securing the baby

Don’t forget to regularly check the height of your child's harness to ensure it is correct for the height of your child.  Our belt-slot positioning video demonstrates correct positioning of the shoulder harness for both the infant and toddler car seats relative to the direction your car seat is facing.  For complete instructions, please refer to our instruction manuals.

3. Traveling on an airplane

Both the Orbit Baby infant and toddler car seats are approved for use on aircraft, and are labeled as such on the product.  To install either car seat in an airplane, follow directions in the instruction manual for installation with a "lap-style" vehicle seat belt, without the car seat base.  The infant car seats can be installed in an aircraft rear-facing, and the Toddler Car Seat can be installed both rear- and forward-facing by using the included Side Impact Braces™.  We recommend you contact your airline prior to travel to ask about their policies around car seats and traveling with young children, and to try and get a bulkhead seat if possible.  To view the safety recommendations issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, visit: http://www.faa.gov/passengers/media/childsafety.pdf

4. Thinking green

Your children may spend a significant amount of time in their car seats, and Orbit Baby car seats meet all applicable flame retardancy standards (FMVSS 302) without the potentially harmful chemicals, like PBBs and PBDEs, that may be found in other car seats.  Our car seats are the first in the industry to be made with fabrics and foams certified safe by Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, ensuring they are healthier for your baby and better for the environment.

Bundle up with Orbit Baby’s Green Edition Footmuffs, the world’s first organic cotton footmuffs featuring our exclusive OrganicFR™ fabric that meets flame retardancy standards without any flame retardant chemicals or additives.  They are the only footmuffs to have been crash tested to Orbit Baby car seats to meet all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 213).

5. Crossing the border

The Orbit Baby Infant Car Seat G2 is the first seat to be cross-border approved for use in both the US and Canada, so you do not have to change seats at the border.  Look for a Canadian certification seal on your infant car seat to ensure it is compliant for both the US and Canada.
