An Industry-Leading Program: Orbit Baby is committed to moving our industry towards safe-for-us, safe-for-our-planet practices. Car seats and strollers are responsible for our children's safety and must perform to the most stringent regulatory standards. We work hard to meet these regulations, and at the same time our engineers challenge themselves every day to think and design in ways that no other baby gear company does, towards greener products and greener practices.
We make the world’s first strollers and car seats with fabrics certified safe by Oeko-Tex® Standard 100. Specifically, the fabrics that contact you and your child on all Orbit Baby G2 strollers and car seats comply to this international standard that sets limits on close to 200 potentially harmful substances and chemicals. Using fabrics that meet this standard helps us ensure that they are healthier for your baby and better for the environment. Read more here about Orbit Baby's efforts.
Update Aug 19th, 2009: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that an Oeko-Tex® fabric certification verifies compliance with the most stringent CPSC limits on lead in products. Read more here.
Our Certified Fabrics initiative is especially important in the baby gear industry because state and federal safety standards (NHTSA FMVSS 302 and California TB 117) require all car seats to meet stringent flame retardancy standards. Many manufacturers meet these requirements by treating their fabrics with toxic brominated and chlorinated chemicals, like PBBs and PBDEs, that can be harmful to children. In contrast, all Orbit Baby products meet all applicable flame retardancy standards without these potentially harmful chemicals.
Update May 18, 2011: In reaction to The Green Science Institute's study showing that 80% of baby products tested contain toxic flame retardants, Orbit Baby is highlighted as an industry leader. Read more here about Orbit Baby's efforts.
Our breakthrough OrganicFRTM fabric offers the comfort of wrapping your baby in organic cotton, while still providing the safety of federal flame retardancy (FR) standards. Orbit Baby's proprietary dual-layer construction of organic cotton and wool is the industry's first fabric to be naturally flame retardant without using any harsh chemicals. Like all fabrics in our industry-leading Certified Fabric program (see below), OrganicFRTM is easier on children's skin.
Orbit Baby is proud to offer our customers the world's first stroller and car seat rain shields made from a clear PVC-free material. With this PVC-free, phthalate-free, and chlorine-free polymer, we can deliver a transparent rain shield solution without the fumes, chemicals, stickiness, and that "shower-curtain smell" associated with PVC.
As we were developing the Orbit Baby travel system, we focused on using only the best materials and processes because our products are designed to be used often, every day. We've accounted for the wear and tear of baby travel by using high-quality materials and designing components to be durable. We go above and beyond standard required tests by designing our own methods to test our products for real-life wear and tear. Read more about how Orbit Baby products are made here.

Here at Orbit, we strive to be carbon neutral. The first and most important thing we can do is reduce our emissions in the first place. We are selective about our travel and we've installed showers to encourage bike commuting. We also encourage getting to work by carpool, public transit, or hybrid whenever possible.
For the travel that we do, Orbit Baby purchases carbon offsets to fund green initiatives in our environment. We choose to fund sustainable energy projects through Climate Care, which encourages innovation and advancement in green technologies.
Orbit Baby was the first business in Newark, California to request and pay for recycling bins. In addition to using biodegradable utensils and minimal packaging here at our office, we recycle all paper, plastic, and cardboard, as well as electronic equipment at authorized recycling centers. Additional materials from our product development work is picked up and recycled into sheet metal by Sims Group. Our packaging is designed for efficient transportation and minimal waste; without bleach, plastic windows, or oily dyes, our brown paper boxes are both efficiently made and efficiently recycled.
You wouldn't compromise on your child's safety, so neither did we. From the FEA (finite element analysis) we conduct to the austenitic stainless steel we use, lots of big ideas to into making our product rock-solid.

Orbit Baby continues to lead the baby gear industry by incorporating innovative parent-friendly and baby-friendly features.
With the Cargo Pod storage bag, you have no need to shuffle through your child's belongings in a low stroller basket. Designed to fit a deceptively large volume of baby essentials, our patent-pending Cargo Pod easily pulls out of the Stroller frame and has a shoulder strap for the perfect on-the-go travel accessory.
We know that parents want to protect their little ones from harsh sun, wind, drizzle and germs, especially during naps. With Orbit Baby, there's no need to throw a blanket over your baby - simply pull down the Paparazzi Shield sunshade extension for nearly 100% UVA and UVB blockage and lightweight, breathable protection for your baby.
Orbit Baby seats are designed so that parents can easily carry, rotate, and undock them without moving the position of their hands. The ergonomically-located side levers make it easy to dock & rotate in one back-saving motion. And unlike other infant car seats that can only be carried lengthwise, our Infant Car Seat's side handles allow parents to comfortably carry it with their elbows tucked in, even through the narrow entries of car doors and airplane aisles.
With our modular approach to baby gear, you can accumulate a lot less gear for family travel. Our system is sensibly designed to grow as your baby grows: just swap out your Orbit seat and keep using the rest of your durable system. From a newborn infant to a toddler, from a walk in the park to a trek through the airport, you can adapt your Orbit travel system to accommodate life’s roller-coaster.
Designed with parents in mind, Orbit's Stroller has a true one-handed fold. Simply by twisting and lifting with one hand on the Stroller, the Stroller frame collapses compactly in all three dimensions to fit in even the smallest car trunks. What's more, instead of you ending up bent to the ground, this backsaving motion leaves you standing with Stroller in hand, ready to go.
The patent-pending soft carrier handles on our Bassinets and Infant Car Seats allow you to carry your infant comfortably close to your body. Other infant carriers have hard plastic handles that position it far from your center of gravity, resulting in an awkward carrying position. Our soft handles are also ergonomically flexible, and fold away easily without separating or detaching.
Mess is a reality when dealing with kids, and parents should not have to compromise the safety of their car seat every time they clean. Orbit Baby's patent-pending car seat upholsteries are not only designed to keep your safety harness intact when you remove it for machine washing, but the installation clamps and belt adjusters are also accessible through easy-access upholstery flaps.
Our car seats provide your child with some of the most well-designed and largest side-protection areas available. Orbit Baby infant and toddler car seats use continuous side-protection impact foam linings made of high-grade EPP foam. The shells of both car seats protect your child by extending noticeably higher on the sides than other car seats on the market.
Government studies have shown that that 4 out of 5 car seats are installed or used incorrectly. That’s why we designed our Base to be easy and intuitive to install securely. The patent-pending StrongArm™ inside of our Base is a “smart force” amplification mechanism. When you apply a normal hand-tightening force to the Base’s knob, the StrongArm™ mechanism outputs a force 12 times greater. This allows grandma to install a car seat just as securely as a fireman, simply by turning a knob.
The SmartHub™ docking ring is used on Orbit Baby's car seat bases, strollers, and rockers. The SmartHub, along with the safety latches on the bottoms of Orbit Baby seats, allows parents to dock, lock and rotate each seat. This revolutionary back-saving system allows 360 degree flexibility for your child on the stroller, as well as ergonomic docking onto the car seat base at an easy angle into the car. As a car seat interface, the SmartHub is the only docking system to provide 360 degrees of security in the car, providing unparalleled side-impact protection for your child.
At Orbit Baby, there is no room for compromise when it comes to strength and durability. Because we design our car seats and stroller to be as safe as possible, all Orbit parts and mechanical systems are made with high-quality, state-of-the-art materials.
The SmartHub™ rotational interface is used on Orbit Baby’s car seat bases, strollers, and rockers, and is integral to the way Orbit Baby seats dock, lock, and rotate. For the ring on the car seat base, we cold-forge the material in a high-pressure hydraulic press to form the SmartHub shape. Rockers and strollers have a SmartHub ring made of a bulletproof polymer that is weather-proof and maximizes strength and light weight.
Orbit Baby strollers have tubing made of aerospace-grade 6061-T6 aluminum. The triangular shape is custom drawn through a forging die into tubes for a more durable structure. For safety, we anneal these tubes to remove crystalline defects and soften them to the proper working state so as not to induce internal stresses in bending. After bending and shaping, the tubes are then taken through a long and gradual heat treatment to harden them again.
For the security of your Orbit Baby seats when docked on the SmartHub™, the safety latches on the bottom of each car seat are made of extremely high-strength materials. The steel and matrix-reinforced latches are made of Nylon 6, a polymer that is higher-grade than the commodity plastics used in most baby gear. The cast aluminum latches, used on our Toddler Car Seat, are made of an alloy heat-treated to achieve the strength and durability required to protect children up to 50 lbs.
The self-tightening mechanism of our Car Seat Base:
The StrongArm™ driveshaft mechanism allows you to securely install the an Orbit Baby car seat base into your car by just turning a knob. Because the integrity of this component ensures a safe car seat installation, we start with 6061 aerospace grade aluminum that has been taken to a T6 temper. Then, in a costly and precise computer-controlled process, we machine these solid blocks into the StrongArm shape.
The StrongArm™ used in Orbit Baby car seat bases is a full metal chassis custom made of extruded 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum. To maintain the integrity of the structure and minimize joints between separate parts, an extremely large press had to be sourced in order to achieve the size and strength of the chassis components.
Most car seats are lined with EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene), commonly called “Styrofoam,” for impact absorption. You many know EPS from disposable household items, as it is a cheaper commodity foam. Orbit Baby car seats are lined instead with EPP (Expanded PolyPropylene), which is a higher-grade engineering foam costing four times as much as EPS. Just pressing on the different types of foam with your hand will convince you of the dramatic difference in cushioning.
Certified clean for your baby:
Through Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, Orbit Baby is committed to fabrics that are hypoallergenic and safe for both your child and the environment. Most inner upholstery fabric of all Orbit seats is certified by the International Oeko-Tex® Association, a Europe-based institution founded to guarantee “confidence in textiles." Car seats made with baby-safe upholstery:
As required by state and federal safety standards (NHTSA FMVSS 302 and California TB 117), all car seats must meet stringent flame retardancy standards. Many manufacturers meet these requirements by treating their fabrics with toxic brominated and chlorinated chemicals, like PBBs and PBDEs, that can be harmful to children. In contrast, Orbit meets all flame retardancy standards without these potentially harmful chemicals.
Protecting your child from the elements:
It is especially important to shield developing infants and children from harmful UV rays. That’s why Orbit Baby provides fully-integrated, complete-cover sun protection with the sunshade and sunshade extension, the Paparazzi Shield™, of our Infant Car Seats and Bassinets. We are also the only company to provide such extensive sun protection on seats for toddlers. All of our sunshades block nearly 100 percent UVA and UVB rays.
The first PVC-free stroller/car seat rain shield:
PVC and associated phthalates are harmful to both the environment and our children. Orbit Baby is proud to offer our customers the world’s first PVC-free rain shields for our Infant Car Seat, Bassinet, and Toddler Stroller Seat. With this PVC-free, phthalate-free, and chlorine-free polymer, we can deliver a transparent rain shield solution without the fumes, chemicals, stickiness, and that “shower-curtain smell” associated with PVC.
Like luxury car interiors, the hard outer surfaces of Orbit products are covered with a high-grade, soft-touch material. This soft finish offers a more comfortable surface than the hard plastic edges and corners of most other baby gear. The foam layer on our Base, Infant Car Seat, Toddler Car Seat and Bassinet is heat-molded to the shell, then laminated with a smooth touch outer skin for a luxury finish.
In the folding mechanism of our Stroller, Orbit has implemented the world’s first stroller application of German-made igus® rod ends. igus® spherical bearings are much preferred over the metal components usually used in this application because they are 80% lighter and highly resistant to corrosion, weak acids, and alkalis. This means that the Stroller’s folding mechanism can withstand heavy weather and repeated usage without becoming strained, rusted, or weak.
All Orbit seats are protected on exterior surfaces with a smooth touch fabric skin. Unlike the outer fabrics on most car seats and stroller seats that are thin and flimsy, this material is often used on premium luggage as it is abrasion-resistant and durable.
At Orbit Baby, we’re determined to go above and beyond the call of duty to guarantee our designs withstand the normal rigors – and unexpected bumps – of everyday use. Here’s a sampling of the tests we do, from stringent government-mandated tests of baby gear, to product validation tests we obligate ourselves to perform.
(American Society for Testing & Materials)
Orbit Baby infant and toddler car seats also adhere to the ASTM F2050 voluntary safety recommendations for Handheld Infant Carriers. This regulation covers pinch hazards, carrier handles, slippage, and warning labeling.
(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration | Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards)
US law requires that all car seats on the market pass this regulatory standard. To pass FMVSS 213 regulations, Orbit’s car seats and car seat base go through rigorous dynamic tests, including multiple kinds of ‘crash tests’ that simulate car accidents, as well as static tests, which include loading buckles and examining labels. These tests ensure a consistent level of car seat safety.
(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration | Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards)
This test is also required by law for all car seats. FMVSS 302 specifies and ensures a level of flame retardancy for Orbit’s car seats and Base. Click here to read more about the flame retardancy of Orbit Baby products.
(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
Because a car seat can only be safe if it is used correctly, NHTSA provides Ease-of-Use guidelines for car seat design. We take these guidelines seriously and certify that our manuals and product labels are user-friendly and that Orbit Baby’s car seats are some of the easiest on the market to install.
Docking Orbit Baby car seats on our car seat bases
The SmartHub is the steel ring of the car seat bases, strollers, and rockers, on which all Orbit Baby seats are docked. To guarantee the security of this primary component, Orbit Baby tests the SmartHub by docking, rotating, and undocking each seat design 3000 times before production. Then, during production, each seat is inspected and tested again on the SmartHub before it is boxed and shipped out.
Installation of our car seat bases
The StrongArm is the self-tightening mechanism that allows you to securely install your car seat Base with just the turn of a knob. Orbit’s StrongArm design is fully rotated forwards and backwards 500 times to prove that this design remains just as safe after hundreds of installations.
(American Society for Testing & Materials)
This voluntary regulatory measure ensures the safety of strollers and stroller seats, and includes tests for strength, durability, stability, and maneuverability. ASTM F833 also offers guidelines for the comfort and security of safety harnesses on children covering the appropriate size range. We meet this regulation with our infant and toddler car seats, bassinets, and stroller seats when docked onto the stroller frame.
Above-and-beyond tip testing
Because all Orbit Baby seats rotate 360 degrees on the stroller, we go above and beyond to perform the Tip Test for each seat in all locked positions on the stroller frame: facing forwards, backwards, or to either side. And since we designed for Orbit Baby seats to sit at a comfortable height for parents, we test to make sure the Stroller can be tipped a full 13 degrees without falling over, which is beyond the ASTM standard.
Extra testing for durability
Because the Orbit Baby stroller grows with your child and can be used with all Orbit Baby seats, we test our stroller design to make sure it is undamaged after a strenuous simulated use of several years. In the Treadmill Test, the stroller is loaded with a seat, Cargo Pod, and 55 pounds (24 kg) of weight, and is then mounted on a special treadmill machine. The treadmill belt has rows of aluminum blocks more than 4 cm high bolted to it, and the Stroller is run for 60 hours to simulate severe real-world Stroller usage.
Testing for real-world scenarios
Strolling off a sidewalk curb is often necessary when you’re out and about with your child, but can wear out a stroller. That’s why we test our stroller design on a machine that simulates rolling off a curb & onto a curb 3000 times before production approval. Before the Curb Drop Test, the stroller is loaded with a lot of weight (50 lbs or 23 kg) so we can be confident the design will remain fully functional all the way up to the weight limit.
Testing for climates around the world
Because some plastics can become brittle in cold temperatures, the plastic parts on Orbit Baby's stroller are validated for cold temperature ranges. In the Cold Temperature Test, plastic parts are frozen to -20 degrees Celsius for 24 hours. Then the weakest areas are stressed by dynamic loading until we are sure all plastic structures can withstand very strenuous use and handling in extremely cold temperatures.
Simulating real-world usage
In this test, we simulate the stress that would occur if a ‘big brother’ were to pull on an Orbit Baby seat while docked on the Rocker. A large amount of stress is put on the outer most parts of each Orbit Baby seat to make sure that the seat does not detach from the Rocker and that the Rocker does not tip over from the added force.
Testing for the highest possible weight rating
Our Rocker is a great indoor solution for all Orbit Baby seats, from the Bassinet that holds your newborn, to the Toddler Car Seat for youngsters up to 50 pounds. Even with these weight ratings, we like to be extra sure of your child’s safety. In the Rocker Load Test, our Rocker withstands 200 pounds (90 kg) of weight without any structural weakening.
(California Technical Bulletin)
This measure lays out requirements for furniture fire safety in the state of California. Because flame retardancy requirements for home items is most stringent in California, we know that our products fare well above all state standards after passing California TB 117.
(American Society for Testing & Materials)
The ASTM F2194 is a voluntary measure intended to ensure the safety of bassinets and cradles. By complying with this measure, Orbit Baby's bassinets meet the requirements of a safe sleeping cradle for infants.
Testing for real-world usage
Orbit Baby's product development engineers employ a diverse team of real-life moms and dads to test our products, both during the design process and after production. We encourage the user team to give our products an enthusiastic run, trying out all usage modes and mechanical systems in real-world scenarios. Because of the extensive surveys, photos, and videos from the Orbit Baby user team, our process is enriched with parental wisdom and our products designed for real-world comfort and safety.

(Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act)
The August 2008 US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA-HR4040) improves upon existing safety requirements for products used by children under twelve, specifically addressing lead paint, lead in substrates and phthalates in products. It also requires self-certification and verification by accredited third party testing laboratories. All Orbit Baby products comply with the most current CPSIA regulations, as asserted in our General Certification of Compliance (GCC).
