Orbit Green

Orbit as a product innovator:

    Leaders of our industry

Orbit Baby is committed to moving the baby gear industry even further towards safe-for-us, safe-for-our-planet practices. Unlike apparel or shoes or handbags, car seats and strollers are responsible for our children’s safety and must perform to the most stringent regulatory standards. These standards challenge our engineers everyday to think and design in ways that no other baby gear company does, towards greener products. We are committed to being the first baby gear company to rid our supply chain of PVC, chrome-plating, brominated chemicals, and oil-based packaging inks, along with a host of other bad-for-us materials.

    Oeko-Tex® Standard 100

Most inner upholstery fabric of all Orbit seats is certified by the International Oeko-Tex® Association, a Europe-based institution founded to guarantee “confidence in textiles." Specifically, Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 is a set of criteria that limits over 100 potentially harmful substances and chemicals, ensuring that our upholstery fabric is especially easy on both your child’s skin and the environment. PVC-free rain shield

PVC and associated phthalates are harmful to both the environment and our children. Orbit Baby is proud to offer our customers the world’s first PVC-free rain shields for our Infant Car Seat, Bassinet, and Toddler Stroller Seat. With this PVC-free, phthalate-free, and chlorine-free polymer, we can deliver a transparent rain shield solution without the fumes, chemicals, stickiness, and that “shower-curtain smell” associated with PVC.

    Safe flame-retardants

As required by state and federal safety standards (NHTSA FMVSS 302 and California TB 117), all car seats must meet stringent flame retardancy standards. Many manufacturers meet these requirements by treating their fabrics with toxic brominated and chlorinated chemicals, like PBBs and PBDEs, that can be harmful to children. In contrast, Orbit meets all flame retardancy standards without these potentially harmful chemicals.

    Modularity

With our modular approach to baby gear, you can accumulate a lot less stuff for family travel. Our system is sensibly designed to grow as your baby grows: just swap out your Orbit seat and keep using the rest of our durable system. From a newborn infant to a rambunctious toddler, from a walk in the park to the airport terminal, you can adapt your Orbit travel system to accommodate life’s roller-coaster.

    Durability

As we were developing the Orbit Baby travel system, we focused on using only the best materials and processes because our products are designed to be used a LOT. We’ve accounted for the wear and tear of baby travel by designing components that are durable and easily mended.

    Recycling program

We are launching a recycling program for families that finally outgrow their Orbit systems. We have designed our products for best-in-industry disassembly for recycling purposes.

Orbit as a company:

    Reducing our carbon footprint

Here at Orbit, we strive to be carbon neutral. The first and most important thing we can do is reduce our emissions in the first place. We are selective about our travel and we’ve installed showers to encourage bike commuting. We also encourage getting to work by carpool, public transit, or hybrid whenever possible.

For the travel that we do, Orbit Baby purchases carbon offsets to fund green initiatives in our environment. We choose to fund sustainable energy projects through Climate Care, which encourages innovation and advancement in green technologies.

    Promoting green energy

At Orbit, we offset 100% of our electricity needs here at our headquarters through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) supplied by 3 Phases. This initiative supports new wind power projects across the nation. The RECs we purchase are Green-e® certified, which ensures they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the Center for Resource Solutions. For more information visit the Green-e website.

    Recycling

Orbit Baby was the first business in Newark, California to request and pay for recycling bins. In addition to using biodegradable utensils and minimal packaging here at our office, we recycle all paper, plastic, beverage containers, and corrugated cardboard. Additional materials from our product development work is picked up and recycled into sheet metal by Sims Group. We are also careful to take all old monitors and electronic equipment to authorized recycling centers.
